What is a Chiropractor?
Chiropractors are physicians who specialize
in the treatment of musculoskeletal, physiological and
biomechanical disorders of the body. Chiropractors use
a variety of specialized techniques to realign the body
and return the spine and surrounding structures to normal
health. In addition, chiropractors help guide the patient
to overall health through instruction in disease prevention,
health promotion, proper nutrition and lifestyle modification.
Chiropractors treat a variety of symptoms and disorders
including low back pain, sciatica, neck and shoulder
problems, headaches, numbness and tingling in the
extremities, foot and ankle problems, whiplash, and
degenerative disorders.
What do Chiropractors do?
Chiropractors do a thorough evaluation to determine
areas of malalignment and dysfunction commonly known
as subluxations. A subluxation is a misalignment
of the bones that can result in nerve pressure and
irritation which can lead to discomfort, pain and
decreased range of motion.
Using specialized adjustments, the chiropractor
will help the spine and surrounding joints to realign
and help unlock fixed structures. The chiropractor
will establish a therapy program for rehabilitation
and maintenance which may include postural exercises,
stretches, strengthening exercises and ergonomic
education.
